Meeting Minutes

The first bi-monthly meeting of the South Central Texas Goat Club of the new year was held on Saturday, January 19, 2008, at the Field Store JP Office. Our guest speaker was Dr. Barbara Johnson of Prairie View A&M University. Dr. Johnson talked to club members about some common contagious diseases of dairy goats such as pinkeye, soremouth, and pneumonia. She also reminded members that Prairie View A&M will be holding its 25th annual Goat Field Day on May 3, 2008, and invited everyone to attend.

Following Dr. Johnson’s talk, Becky called the club business meeting to order. Treasurer John Stritch reported that since the November meeting, the club had received $140 in dues and spent $208.88 on a floral arrangement for Blue Weimann’s funeral, newsletter printing and mailing expenses, and webhosting. The club’s current checking account balance was $3,658.45. Caroline did not have minutes to read as she was unable to attend the November club meeting.

Caroline asked club members if they would agree to the addition of a third ring of senior does again at this year’s club show since the Lufkin show had been cancelled. Motion by D’Ann, second by Tammy to add a third ring. Members were unanimously in favor. Scott Horner will judge the third ring. Entry fees will be discounted for those entering the same doe in all three rings. Kay Kloecker, Tim Carlson and Christian Seger agreed to be show secretaries. We will need ring stewards the day of the show and other volunteers the day before (Friday, May 23rd) to help with set up and cleaning. Cynthia and Alton and their family will run the concessions on Saturday.

Caroline also asked club members if they were in favor of donating $50 to the Burnet County Youth Dairy Goat Show and $75 to the Robertson County Youth Market Goat Show again this year. Motion by D’Ann, second by Pat to donate these funds. Motion passed.

Members discussed underwriting the dairy goat shows at the Washington County Fair once again. The WCF board told Scott Horner that they could no longer afford to spend the money to pay for premiums. Members agreed that premiums were not necessary in order to encourage attendance.

D’Ann asked members to approve expenses related to purchasing a new printer for the club’s newsletter. Motion by Caroline, second by Pat to allow D’Ann to spend up to $250 to purchase a new printer.

Becky told club members that Producer’s Cooperative in Bryan would manufacture a mineral mix from Langston University’s recipe (formulated specifically for goats) if anyone was interested. The minimum order would be 40 bags (50 lbs each) and would sell for $19 per bag.

There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned. Our next club meeting will be held on March15th at Producer’s Cooperative in Bryan. No speaker has been announced to date.

Respectfully submitted,
Caroline Lawson Club Secretary
